Urostomy Association webinar on travelling with a urostomy

11 April @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm BST

Urostomy Association urinary diversion

Whether you’re considering or already have a urinary diversion, you may have all sorts of questions about how this might affect your life, day to day. At the Urostomy Association (UA) we’ve been listening to your helpline and Facebook queries and designing a series of webinars which explore some of the most common topics.

The webinars, which we’re running once a month to start with, will last about an hour and comprise of an introduction from a subject-matter expert, ‘real life experience’ from two UA volunteers, and time for Q&As. As Spring approaches and people’s minds turn to holidays, our first topic will be travelling with a urostomy. Speakers include:

Margaret Hilsdon – Margaret is a retired teacher who has lived and worked in many countries around the world. She had her urostomy surgery in March 2020, as a result of bladder cancer. She is an active member of the Cambridge branch of the UA, which provides help and support to urostomates and those facing surgery. Since having the urostomy she has started travelling extensively in many different ways.

Louise Hoolighan – Louise is a Stoma Nurse Specialist at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank, Glasgow. She has worked in this role for around 18 months. Prior to that, she was a Stoma Nurse for NHS Lothian. In that post she worked closely with people having urostomy surgeries, as well as post operatively in clinic. Overall Louise has nearly 16 years’ experience working with colorectal/urology surgical patients.

Donna Watson – Donna Watson is a former nurse and midwife and had her urostomy surgery following an accident. She has been our Urostomy Association volunteer in Northern Ireland since 2014, and has built-up a support group in her region which provides advice, guidance, and social interaction for a growing number of urostomates. As a volunteer, Donna meets with and provides peer support prior to and after surgery, and she also assists in providing training for security staff at Northern Irelands busiest airport.
