Top tips

  • Carry a small travel kit containing the items you need for a change of stoma appliance or other equipment at all times when you are out and about or away on holiday – this will help you feel confident that you can deal with any situation that should arise.
  • Continue to take extra care of the skin around your stoma, avoiding irritants so that it does not become sore.
  • Empty your stoma pouch before you start any form of exercise or sport.
  • Take time to find the right clothing and equipment for use when taking part in sports – there are no fixed rules about what to wear or use, it is whatever you are most comfortable with.
  • Drink between 2 and 3 litres of water a day to keep mucus flushed through, especially on hot days.
